UGC Allows One-Year PG Programmes in Online & ODL Mode: Eligibility, Rules & Who Can Apply (2026)

A one-year master's degree through online or distance learning is now possible in India. In a circular issued on 28 July 2026, the University Grants Commission (UGC) clarified the framework under which eligible universities can offer One-Year Postgraduate (PG) Programmes through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and/or Online mode, in line with NEP 2020. This guide explains the rules in simple language, who can actually apply, and what you should verify before taking admission.

What Has UGC Announced?

UGC has permitted eligible Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) to offer one-year PG programmes in ODL and online mode. The July 28 circular replaced an earlier circular on the same subject issued on July 24, so make sure any information you read refers to the latest one.

The one-year programme is meant to follow the same academic standards as a regular PG programme: the prescribed curriculum, credit framework, assessment methods and UGC regulations for online and distance education all continue to apply.

Who Is Eligible to Apply?

This is the most important point, and the one most students miss.

Which Universities Can Offer It?

Not every university can start a one-year PG programme right away. UGC has set two conditions:

  1. The university must already be recognised or entitled by UGC to offer the corresponding two-year PG programme in ODL and/or online mode
  2. The one-year programme can be offered only in the same discipline as that approved two-year programme

Before launching, universities also need internal approvals from their Board of Studies, Academic Council and Executive Council. This means the one-year option will not appear everywhere at once. Some universities may announce it for upcoming sessions, while others may take longer.

Is a One-Year Online PG Right for You?

Who May Benefit

Honours graduates who want to finish a master's quickly, working professionals who cannot take a two-year break from earning, and learners who want a flexible study mode without relocating to a campus.

What to Think About Carefully

5 Checks Before You Take Admission

  1. Verify recognition on the UGC-DEB portal (deb.ugc.ac.in) for the exact university, programme and session
  2. Confirm the one-year option is officially launched by that university. Ask for it in writing, not just in a brochure
  3. Check your own eligibility: your bachelor's must be a Four-Year Honours degree
  4. Compare fees and last dates from the university's official admission page
  5. Create your DEB ID as required for online and ODL admissions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I do a one-year online PG after a three-year bachelor's degree?

Under the UGC framework, the one-year PG programme is meant for learners who have completed a Four-Year Bachelor's Degree with Honours. If you have a three-year degree, the two-year PG programme is the route to consider.

Can any university start the one-year PG programme?

No. Only universities already recognised or entitled by UGC to offer the matching two-year PG programme in ODL or online mode, and only in the same discipline.

Is the one-year online PG less valuable than the two-year one?

UGC requires the one-year programme to follow the same curriculum, credit framework and assessment standards as regular PG programmes. Still, check how your target employer or institution views it before you decide.

Which universities are offering the one-year online PG right now?

Universities are still announcing their plans, so there is no single list to rely on yet. Check the official university admission page and the UGC-DEB portal, or talk to our counsellors for the latest status.

Final Word

UGC's decision opens a faster route to a master's degree for Four-Year Honours graduates, but it is not available to everyone and not every university is ready. Verify recognition and the official launch of the one-year programme before you pay any fee.
