UGC Extends Last Date for Online & ODL Admissions to 13 October 2026: What Students Should Do Now
If you have been postponing your online or distance degree admission, you now have a little more time, but not much. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has extended the last date of admission for Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and Online programmes for the August 2026 session (academic year 2026-27) from 15 September to 13 October 2026. With only a few days left, here is what the extension means and what you should complete before the deadline.
What Exactly Did UGC Announce?
In its notice, UGC said the extension was made for the benefit of stakeholders. Two dates have moved:
- Last date of admission: extended from 15 September 2026 to 13 October 2026
- Last date for universities to upload admission data on the UGC-DEB portal: extended from 18 September 2026 to 16 October 2026
All Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) offering programmes in ODL and/or Online mode have been advised to follow the revised timeline and to comply with the applicable UGC regulations. UGC has also reminded students to verify the recognition status of both the programme and the university on the UGC-DEB portal before taking admission.

Who Does This Extension Apply To?
It applies to fresh admissions in programmes offered by recognised or entitled universities in ODL and online mode for the August 2026 session. Several universities, including IGNOU and the School of Open Learning at the University of Delhi, have referred to the 13 October date for their own admissions. Each university has its own process, so check the exact admission details on its official website. Some programme types may be treated differently, so do not assume that every course is covered.
The extension does not make an unrecognised university or programme valid. Recognition has to be checked separately.
What to Do in the Next Few Days
1. Decide Your University and Programme
Shortlist two or three options and compare fees, eligibility, exam pattern and support. If you are still comparing, use our college comparison tool to see them side by side.
2. Verify Recognition on the UGC-DEB Portal
Check the university and your exact programme for the current session at deb.ugc.ac.in. A university being recognised does not automatically mean every course it advertises is covered.
3. Create Your DEB-ID
UGC requires learners to register on the UGC-DEB portal using their Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) ID to generate a unique DEB-ID, which is mandatory to enrol in ODL and online programmes at recognised or entitled universities. If you do not have an ABC-ID yet, create it first, since this can take some time.
4. Confirm Your Eligibility and Documents
Keep your marksheets, ID proof, photograph and other required documents ready. Confirm the eligibility rules on the university's official admission page before paying any fee.
5. Complete Admission and Fee Payment Before 13 October
Universities must upload admission data by 16 October, so an admission that is not completed in time risks not being registered properly. Do not wait for the last day, as portals can be slow near deadlines. Keep payment receipts and your admission confirmation safe.

๐ฌ Ask on WhatsAppWarning Signs to Watch for Near the Deadline
Deadlines are when misleading offers increase. UGC's public notices have repeatedly cautioned students about a few things:
- Prohibited programmes: certain disciplines, such as Engineering, Medical and Law, cannot be offered through ODL or online mode, and online MPhil or PhD programmes are not permitted
- Franchise admissions: universities are not allowed to admit students or run ODL/online courses through franchising arrangements, so be careful with agents or centres who claim to give admission on a university's behalf
- "Special" last-minute offers: get any fee concession or promise in writing from the university itself, and verify everything on the official portal
What If You Miss the Deadline?
If you cannot complete admission by 13 October, the practical option is to plan for the next intake. Universities generally run admission cycles in two sessions a year, so you can use the time to shortlist properly, verify recognition and arrange your documents. Do not rely on another extension. UGC has extended deadlines in earlier sessions, but it is never guaranteed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the new last date for online and ODL admission in the August 2026 session?
UGC has extended it to 13 October 2026, from the earlier date of 15 September 2026. Universities have until 16 October 2026 to upload admission data on the UGC-DEB portal.
Does the extension apply to every university?
It applies to recognised or entitled universities offering ODL and online programmes for the August 2026 session. Individual universities may have their own admission steps, so confirm on the official website of your chosen university.
Is the DEB-ID compulsory?
Yes. UGC requires learners to generate a DEB-ID through the UGC-DEB portal using their ABC-ID in order to enrol in ODL and online programmes at recognised or entitled universities.
Can I take admission in a programme that is not on the UGC-DEB list?
It is risky. UGC advises students to verify the recognition of the programme and the university before admission. A degree from an unrecognised programme can create problems for jobs and higher studies.
Will UGC extend the date again?
There is no announcement of a further extension at the time of writing. Plan to finish by 13 October and treat any later date as a bonus, not a plan.
Final Word
The extra weeks are helpful, but the basics have not changed: pick a recognised university, verify the exact programme on the UGC-DEB portal, generate your DEB-ID and complete the admission before 13 October. If you are unsure at any step, talk to someone before paying any fee.
