Education Loan for an Online Degree in India (2026): Who Gives It, What Lenders Check and Safer Options
Last updated: 16 October 2026
Quick answer: can you get an education loan for an online degree?
Sometimes, yes, but it is harder than for a regular campus degree. Many public sector banks still prefer full-time, on-campus programmes and often decline online or distance degrees. NBFCs and some private lenders do fund UGC-DEB approved online programmes, and many universities also offer instalment or no-cost EMI plans through partner financiers. Every lender will first check whether your university and your programme are recognised for your admission session.
- Banks: approval for online degrees varies by bank and by university, so ask the branch in writing.
- NBFCs and fintech lenders: more open to UGC-DEB approved online programmes, but interest rates are often higher.
- 0% EMI: a payment plan on the course fee, not a bank loan. Read the section below to see the difference.
- First step: confirm the recognition status of your university and programme on deb.ugc.ac.in.
Why education loans for online degrees are harder to get
Traditional education loan schemes were designed for full-time courses in colleges and universities that students attend in person. Online and distance programmes are newer to many lenders' policies, and credit teams worry about two things: whether the degree is genuinely recognised, and whether the borrower can repay while studying part-time or working.
That is why the same degree can get a loan from one lender and a refusal from another. A refusal does not mean your degree is invalid. It usually means that lender has no policy for that type of programme or university.
Education loan vs 0% EMI: what is the difference?
Many students confuse these two. They are not the same thing.
| Education loan | 0% EMI / no-cost EMI | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A loan from a bank or NBFC | The course fee split into monthly instalments through a partner |
| Interest | Charged on the loan | Advertised as zero, but check for processing fees and other charges |
| Who gives it | Bank, NBFC or fintech lender | Usually the university's financing partner |
| Checks | Credit score, income, sometimes a co-applicant | Credit and KYC checks by the partner |
| Tax benefit | Interest may qualify for a deduction. Ask your CA. | Usually no interest to claim |
| Best for | Large fees you cannot pay in instalments | Students who can manage a fixed monthly amount |

What lenders usually check
- UGC-DEB recognition of the university and the programme for your admission session.
- Admission proof: offer letter or admission confirmation and the official fee structure.
- Your profile: identity, address, income or employment proof, and credit score.
- A co-applicant, often a parent, spouse or earning family member, especially for students without income.
- Lender's own list: some lenders fund only universities on their approved list.
Documents to keep ready
- Aadhaar, PAN and address proof
- Admission letter and fee structure from the university
- Last 3 to 6 months of bank statements
- Salary slips or income tax returns, if you or your co-applicant earn
- Your DEB-ID, which UGC requires for online and ODL admissions (see how to create it)
Interest rates and hidden costs to check
NBFC and fintech loan rates are often reported in the double digits, so they can be noticeably higher than a bank's rate for a regular course. Do not rely on a headline rate. Ask for these in writing before you sign:
- The exact annual interest rate and whether it is fixed or floating
- Processing fee, GST and any documentation charges
- Whether interest starts during the course (pre-EMI) or only after
- Prepayment and foreclosure charges
- The total amount you will repay by the end of the loan

Ask on WhatsAppStep-by-step: how to apply for an education loan for an online degree
- Verify recognition first. Check the university and your programme on the UGC-DEB portal for the session you want. Our UGC-DEB checker can help.
- Get the fee structure in writing from the university, including exam fees and any extra charges.
- Ask each lender one direct question: "Do you fund a UGC-DEB approved online programme from this university?"
- Compare 2 or 3 offers on rate, charges, tenure and total repayment.
- Apply with a complete set of documents to avoid delays.
- Check where the money goes. The loan should be paid to the university's official account.
Safer alternatives to taking a big loan
- Pay by semester or year. Many universities allow fee payment in parts instead of one upfront amount.
- Use a genuine 0% EMI plan when the monthly amount fits your budget and the charges are clear.
- Ask your employer whether they reimburse or sponsor higher education.
- Choose a lower-cost approved university. See our list of the cheapest online MBA options and the compare tool.
Red flags: how loan scams around online degrees work
- An agent asks for money to "approve" or "guarantee" your loan.
- The loan amount is to be sent to a personal account instead of the university.
- You are told "100% loan approval" before any checks.
- You are asked to sign blank forms or share your OTP.
- The lender cannot show that it is a registered bank or NBFC.
- The university cannot show its status on the UGC-DEB portal. Read our guide on how to verify a fake university.

Frequently asked questions
Do banks give education loans for online degrees?
Some do and many do not. Public sector banks often prefer full-time campus programmes. NBFCs and some private lenders are more likely to fund a UGC-DEB approved online programme. Ask each lender directly, in writing.
Is an education loan available for online MBA?
It can be, mainly from NBFCs and fintech lenders, when the university and programme are UGC-DEB approved. Approval depends on the lender, the university and your profile.
Is 0% EMI the same as an education loan?
No. 0% EMI is a payment plan on the course fee through a partner, while an education loan is credit from a bank or NBFC with interest. Compare the total cost of both before choosing.
Do I need a co-applicant?
Often yes, especially if you do not have a regular income. A parent, spouse or earning family member usually becomes the co-applicant.
Can I claim a tax deduction on the interest?
Interest on a loan taken for higher education may qualify for a deduction, but it depends on the lender, the programme and the current tax rules. Ask a chartered accountant before you rely on it.
Does UniversityJano give loans?
No. UniversityJano is an information and counselling platform. Always read the terms directly with the lender, and never pay anyone to "approve" a loan.
